Chelsea is London’s dining capital, Spitalfields its drinking capital, and Holborn is where the city sleeps. That is the picture from the inaugural Lamplit London Going-Out Map, our breakdown of what every London neighbourhood is actually for, drinking, dining or staying the night, based on 2377 notable venues across the city.

Count of notable bars, restaurants and hotels in the Lamplit London guides, by neighbourhood.
How we worked it out
We took every notable bar, restaurant and hotel in the Lamplit London guides and sorted them by neighbourhood. The density ranking counts all venues in each area. The personality breakdown, drinking, dining or staying, is based on the share of each neighbourhood’s categorised venues that fall into each type, and ranks only the 30 neighbourhoods with at least ten categorised venues so each figure is meaningful. These are our own editorial selections rather than a full census of every venue in London, so read them as a portrait of where the city’s best going-out is concentrated, not a phone book.
Plan a night in any of them
Wherever the map points you, our guides pick the places worth booking, from the cost of a date in every neighbourhood to the best cocktail bars and the restaurants worth the occasion. Start with Plan Your Trip to build the evening.
