Kitchen Table
Tasting menu, counter dining ££££
Kitchen Table sits behind an unassuming door on Charlotte Street, sharing a building with chef James Knappett’s more casual restaurant Bubbledogs, though the two could not be more different in ambition. Inside, just 20 guests a night sit around a horseshoe-shaped counter facing the open kitchen, watching the tasting menu built and plated in front of them.
Knappett and his wife, sommelier Sandia Chang, opened the restaurant in 2012, and it earned a Michelin star within two years, followed by a second in 2018, a genuinely fast rise for a restaurant of this size and format. The menu changes daily depending on what produce is available, which can stretch to a large number of small courses across an evening, built around meticulously sourced British ingredients rather than a fixed repertoire.
The counter format is the whole point: there is no separation between kitchen and diner, so the meal doubles as a running commentary from the chefs themselves, which suits people who enjoy that kind of engagement and can feel intense for anyone wanting a quieter, more private dinner. Wine pairings, curated by Chang, are a genuine strength and worth the additional cost given how well matched they are to a menu that shifts daily.
Booking is genuinely difficult given the tiny covers count, and the format, a long evening at a counter with strangers close by, will not suit everyone, particularly those wanting the more traditional distance of table service. It is also a serious financial commitment for what is, in the end, a tasting menu with no à la carte alternative.
For anyone who wants to watch two-Michelin-starred cooking happen close up, it delivers on that promise convincingly.
The tasting menu format means pricing is fixed rather than à la carte, and at this level of ambition it sits well into four figures for a couple once wine pairings are added, a genuine commitment even by London’s fine-dining standards. Next door, Bubbledogs offers a far more casual, drop-in alternative from the same team, useful context for understanding the range Knappett and Chang operate across. Given the tiny room, cancellations are taken seriously, and most bookings require a deposit or full pre-payment well ahead of the date.
