A seven storey marble staircase greets guests walking in from High Holborn, reportedly one of the most valuable single features of any hotel in London, and it sets the tone for Rosewood London before you have even reached the front desk. The building started life in 1914 as the headquarters of the Pearl Assurance Company, and the Edwardian bones, high ceilings, ornate stonework, a grand internal courtyard, have been preserved rather than smoothed over by the 2013 renovation that turned it into a Rosewood property.

The 306 rooms lean traditional in their furnishings, Italian marble bathrooms and bespoke pieces throughout, though the hotel is arguably better known for a single suite: the Manor House Wing, a seven bedroom residence with its own postcode, private entrance and dedicated doorman, aimed squarely at guests wanting privacy on a scale most hotels cannot offer. The hotel’s Mirror Room and Scarfes Bar add further reasons to linger without leaving the building, the latter known for live jazz and a substantial whisky list.

Location is a genuine strength. High Holborn sits close to Covent Garden, the British Museum and the West End theatres, walkable to most of central London without the premium of a Mayfair postcode, though also without quite the same immediate glamour.

Staff, dressed in tweed rather than conventional hotel uniforms, contribute to a slightly different atmosphere than the standard five star script, warmer and less stiff than some of the grander Mayfair addresses.

The honest caveat is that the hotel’s scale, over 300 rooms, means it can feel busier and less intimate than smaller luxury properties, particularly around the lobby and courtyard at peak times, and the location, while convenient, lacks the immediate prestige some guests are paying for at this price point. It is a genuinely striking building rather than a quiet retreat, and works best for guests who want to be in the middle of things.
