The Dickens Inn

The Dickens Inn occupies a reconstructed eighteenth century warehouse at Marble Quay in St Katharine Docks, a short walk from Tower Bridge, and its wooden balconies overlooking the marina have made it one of the more photographed pub exteriors in London for decades, long before the docks themselves became a regular tourist stop.

Inside, the building splits across the Grill restaurant for dockside dining with a Tower Bridge view, a recently refreshed terrace for drinks in warmer weather, and the smaller Pickwick Bar downstairs for a more straightforward pint away from the restaurant crowd.

The setting does most of the work here: boats moored in the dock just below the windows, Tower Bridge visible from the terrace on a clear day, and a genuinely striking exposed timber frame that sets it apart from a standard riverside chain pub of the kind found further along the Thames path.

Food and service are where opinions split most sharply. Some guests describe classic pub dishes served well and with genuine warmth, others report slow, inattentive service and portions that do not match the prices charged, and both views turn up regularly enough in reviews to suggest real inconsistency rather than isolated bad nights from an otherwise reliable kitchen.

Go for the setting and a drink on the terrace rather than for a meal you are relying on to be excellent, and it earns its reputation as one of the more atmospheric spots on the river even on an average night for food.

St Katharine Docks itself has developed considerably over the past decade, with newer bars and restaurants opening around the marina, so the Dickens Inn no longer has the setting entirely to itself the way it once did. It remains the most recognisable building in the docks, however, and its position directly on the water, a short stroll from Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, keeps it firmly on the route for anyone sightseeing in this part of London regardless of how the food reviews read that week. Weekday lunchtimes tend to be quieter and better value than the weekend dinner service, which is worth knowing for anyone chiefly interested in the view and the setting rather than committing to a full evening meal at peak pricing.
