Heckfield Place

Heckfield Place is in rural Hampshire, roughly an hour’s drive from central London and about 45 minutes from Heathrow, set across 400 acres that include a working biodynamic farm supplying much of what ends up on the plate. It opened in 2018 and has built its identity firmly around that farm-to-table connection rather than the more traditional grandeur other country-house hotels lean on.

Chef Skye Gyngell directs the food across the estate’s two restaurants. Marle is the more formal of the two, light-filled with a terrace overlooking the lake, and the menu shifts constantly depending on what the farm and gardens are producing that week. Hearth, set in the estate’s former stables, is more relaxed but only open to hotel guests at weekends, which limits access for anyone visiting for the day.

Rooms are done in a calm, understated style that avoids the heavier, more traditional country-house look, closer to considered modern comfort than period grandeur, which sets it apart from more classically styled competitors nearby.

Reviews of the restaurants are genuinely mixed. Some guests describe the farm-to-fork cooking as the best they have had at a UK country hotel, while others have found Marle competent without being especially memorable, a fair reflection of how much the kitchen’s ambition depends on what the farm happens to be yielding on a given week. It is also a genuinely expensive stay, and the more limited access to Hearth for non-residents is worth knowing before planning a visit.

For a country escape built around a real working farm rather than a manicured garden, it offers something distinct among London’s nearby countryside hotels, provided expectations for the food stay realistic.

The estate includes a spa built into converted farm buildings, with treatments that draw on produce grown on site, and a Home Farm shop where guests can buy some of what the kitchens use. It is a smaller, more intimate operation than many of the larger country-house hotels near London, with a correspondingly personal feel to the service. Rates reflect that exclusivity, sitting at the top end of the market, and the hour-plus drive from central London makes it better suited to an overnight or longer stay than a day trip.
