Trafalgar Tavern

The Trafalgar Tavern has stood at the north end of Park Row since 1837, right on the Thames beside the Old Royal Naval College, and it is now the last survivor of the grand riverside taverns that once lined this stretch of Greenwich and Blackwall. In the nineteenth century these were famous for whitebait dinners eaten while watching the river, a Victorian tradition the pub still nods to with whitebait on the current menu.

Architecturally it is a genuine set piece, designed by Joseph Kay on the site of an earlier eighteenth-century tavern, with large windows giving a proper Thames outlook rather than a token river glimpse. The interior carries an opulent, slightly formal feel for a pub, chandeliers and a real art collection on the walls, which separates it from the average gastropub aesthetic. It has also functioned as a wedding and events venue for years, which gives a sense of how seriously the building takes its own grandeur.

Food runs classic British: steak and kidney pie, bangers and mash, a traditional Sunday roast, alongside the whitebait that remains something of a house speciality and a link back to the building’s original purpose. None of it is groundbreaking, but it is done with more care than the average tourist-facing riverside pub manages, and the range of beers, wines and spirits on offer goes noticeably further than a standard pub list.

The location does most of the heavy lifting, and on a warm evening with a pint on the riverside terrace watching boats go past, it is hard to argue with the setting. The trade-off is that Greenwich pulls a heavy tourist crowd, particularly at weekends, so expect busier service and a menu pitched to please a broad, visiting audience rather than push any culinary boundaries. Combined with a visit to the Old Royal Naval College or the Cutty Sark, both a short walk away, it makes for a natural stop on a Greenwich day out rather than a destination in its own right, and it has more than earned its keep as a genuine survivor of a once much larger riverside tradition.
