Sweetings has been serving fish from the same City of London address since 1889, and it has resisted almost every modernising instinct a restaurant this old might otherwise pick up over more than a century: no dinner service, no reservations taken under any circumstances, and a room of high wooden counters and bentwood chairs that looks much as it must have decades ago, right down to the crockery.

The menu is built entirely around fish and shellfish: oysters served on ice, potted shrimp, a daily changing catch cooked simply, either grilled or fried, alongside old-school British puddings like spotted dick for anyone with room left. The signature drink, a Black Velvet made from stout and Champagne, is as much a ritual for regulars as anything actually listed on the food menu, ordered almost on autopilot by City workers who have been coming for years. Wine is served from a short, sensible list rather than anything showy, in keeping with the restaurant’s general refusal to chase trends of any kind.

Because it only opens for weekday lunch and takes no bookings whatsoever, the clientele is heavily weighted towards City workers on their lunch hour, and there is a real rhythm to how it operates: arrive, wait if you must, eat at a reasonable pace even if there is a queue building behind you, and expect to stand at the counter if all the proper seats are already taken by the time you arrive. Staff have clearly done this for years and manage the turnover briskly without ever feeling rude about it.

That rigidity is precisely what its regulars value most: a fixed, unchanging routine in a part of London where almost everything else nearby has been replaced by chains and glass office towers since the restaurant first opened its doors in the 1880s.

The honest caveat: the lack of dinner service, weekend opening or any form of reservation makes it genuinely inconvenient for anyone not working nearby on a weekday, and diners expecting a leisurely, modern seafood restaurant experience with a relaxed evening booking should adjust their expectations considerably before they go.
